What is leadership?

Decades of study and academic analysis have resulted in over 350 definitions of leadership.  If you have ever tried to define leadership and couldn’t quite pin it down, maybe your response would be, “I know it when I see it.”  It shouldn’t be that elusive!  Developing leaders in Presbyterian Women is very important, enough so that the Churchwide Coordinating Team invested time and money into training six women from each synod this past March in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Here are some ideas to ponder about leaders.

A leader uses language and actions to convey a genuine care and respect for the people they serve.

A leader serves out of a sense of personal and corporate mission.

A leader is imaginative, clear of purpose and able to elicit support of a shared dream.

A leader knows their strengths and their limitations, and easily conveys both without being boastful or apologetic.

A leader is quietly confident and wants others to believe in themselves also.

A leader feels connected to something bigger.

A leader’s efforts are grounded in the commitment and energy of a “community of believers.”

A leader is both a patient listener and a creative responder.

Who do you know exhibits these qualities?  Do you?  Do others around you?  Can you think of some women in your church who have not been in leadership positions, yet exhibit these qualities?

What other leadership qualities would you add to the list?  Are there some qualities you think should be omitted?

Let me hear from you about your ideas on leadership.
