Acronyms - Unraveling the Alphabet Soup

Acronyms are words formed combining the initial letters or parts of a series of words. Presbyterian Women (PW) as well as the Presbyterian Church (PC(USA)) have lots of acronyms that have developed over the years. Some are more familiar than others.

For clarity in speaking, use the words and not the initials whenever feasible. In written material, always use the words the first time the phrase is used followed by the acronym in parentheses. Here is a list of common ones for your reference. More are listed on page 11-1 in the PW Manual.

CWU - Church Women United
GA - General Assembly
GAC - General Assembly Council
JFW - Justice For Women
LMPW - Lake Michigan Presbyterian Women
NNPCW - National Network of Presbyterian College Women
PC(USA) - Presbyterian Church (USA)
PDS - Presbyterian Distribution Service
PLM - Presbytery of Lake Michigan
POD - Presbytery of Detroit
PSV - Presbytery of Scioto Valley
PW - Presbyterian Women
PW/PSV - Presbyterian Women in the Presbytery of Scioto Valley
PWC - Presbyterian Women in the Congregation
PWP - Presbyterian Women in the Presbytery

What is a Synod?

The Synod of the Covenant is one of 16 synods in the denomination. There are 11 presbyteries in our synod comprising of over 800 congregations (Michigan, Ohio and a few congregations in the northern Kentucky, southeastern Indiana and one in Wisconsin) .
